A teacher put a problem before students of class IV.
Add 400+7
A student has done it in the following way
400+7 = 4007
Another student has done in following manner
400+7 = 1100
What prerequisite knowledge might students not have?
What kind of questions can be asked to students to
address their misconception?
The students might not have knowledge of place value of each digit of given two numbers.
ReplyDeleteWe can ask about of each digit in 400 and place value of 7.
First we have to make different columns for hundred tens and units. Then arrange the first number (400) according to their place value. Then put symbol of sign(+) at the left side and write second number (7) according to its place value. We have to make understand students that we can only add any such digits with same place value only. Then we will get the correct answer.
Students not having understood place value may face difficulty in understanding many concepts like Arithmetic Operations.
ReplyDeleteVarious activities related to grouping, splitting and establishing the equivalence between different groupings of the same number,
would help a lot in developing a good and proper understanding of place value.
An example of 2 types of groupings of a number is given below:
Activity 1: Ask students to – a) split 160 boys into one group of 100 boys and rest of 10 boys each b) split the 160 boys into groups of
10 boys each
Activity 2: Ask students to – a) split 1670 into groups of only hundreds and tens, groups of only thousands and hundreds b) different
students can come up with different types of groupings – two different ways of splitting 1670 into hundreds and tens are 16
hundreds and 7 tens, 15 hundreds and 170 tens.
These activities can be done using place value blocks or any other articles.
The student might not have a knowledge of place va;ue.

ReplyDeleteFollow the ELPS method . In case symbol first it should be asked in the column method, then use the symbol , it will be appropriate.

ReplyDeleteIt's obvious that the child has not understood Place Value and addition. To teach the concept of place value teacher can use place value cards and explain the place value of 4 in the number 400 and the place value of 7. 10 Bundles of 10 ice cream sticks can be used to show that 10 time 10 will give 100 and so on. Once the child has understood the place value through different activities done by the teacher, the child should be given the same number and he should solve the sum.

The child don't know the concept of place value. Once the place value concept is clear than the child will be able to do addition of 3-digit number with 1-digit number.

ReplyDeleteIt is clear from the misconcept that a student is unaware that while adding we need to take account the place value system also. The child knows how to add 4 and 7 correctly but 400 + 7 = 407 only as the addition is happening at ones place only and not at hundreds place. to get 1100 as answer one need to add 400 and 700 .
ReplyDeleteSome questions like how did you get this answer and enquiring the child about his/her reason of the answer will help a teacher frame a strategy to deal with this misconcept.
The child is not having the concept of Place Value. This problem can be corrected in four steps:
ReplyDelete1. Introducing numbers by ELPS method.
2. Using physical objects, such as body parts, then currency, then using match sticks.
3. Using Place Value Cards
4. Then actual posing mental problems
Thr student doesn't know how to add numbers. First they should write Hundreds, tens and ones and then below it the numbers should be written and added.
ReplyDeleteThe Pre-requisite knowledge about place value is missing, The question can be put up by the teacher by using place value columns and provide the opportunity for the child to try and answer the same question.

Can be asked and explained that 10+7 is 17 chocolates not 107 chocolates . later arranging numbers according to p lace values need to be explained

Learner needs to be first made to understand the importance of reading numbers based on the place they are in . Learner should know that value of the number depends on the place it is placed in the place value chart. Especially during addition they need to know that in the example 7 takes ones place while 4 takes hundreds place.

ReplyDeleteOne can ask like - can 3 pens and 2 pencils be equal to 5 pens, if not why and so on to make them understand that different object can not be clubbed (added or subtracted) together. Then one can ask what is difference between 38 and 8 then 200 and 50 and so on and then explain to the students that 7 has to be added to which digit.

ReplyDeleteThe second student needs to be guided by helping the child to understand and differentiate between facevalue and placevalue. Even simple addition starting from double digit has to be taught.
